This session explores the emerging Critical Algorithmic Literacy (CAL) framework. Representing a synthesis of computer science and critical media literacy, the CAL framework seeks to empower students to evaluate, challenge, and reconstruct algorithmically-driven media. We will define and explore the CAL framework and look at curricular examples from various grade levels. The critical examination of and interactions with these algorithmic effects help students question algorithmic authority by assessing the complex relationships between their lives and the algorithms that determine what they see and what is deemed as important.
